We strongly suggest sealants for all 6 and 12 year old molars as soon as they erupt. Children do not have the dexterity to properly clean these chewing surfaces and, often, the natural grooves are too deep to get thoroughly cleaned with a toothbrush. At our office, we clean the grooves using air abrasion to remove any debris and decalcification and then seal the grooves with sealant. Sealant is a composite resin that hardens and bonds to the tooth to help block the deep grooves and make them a smooth, easy to clean surface. We see a dramatic reduction in decay rates of children with sealants.
